This policy explains what information the Rainbow Captions for YouTube app for Mac (“Rainbow Captions”, “the app”) and the website rainbowcaptions.com handle, why, and what choices you have.
The short version
- You don’t create an account with us. There are no ads and no tracking in the app or on the website, and we don’t sell your information.
- When you connect a YouTube channel, you sign in with Google. Your sign-in tokens stay in the Keychain on your Mac.
- When you translate, the text of your subtitles is sent to Google’s translation services. We don’t receive it.
- To run the free plan, the app keeps a small record per Mac on Google Firebase. It is keyed by a one-way hash, not by your name or email.
- Apple handles payments. RevenueCat tells the app whether your subscription is active.

YouTube API Services
Rainbow Captions uses YouTube API Services to work with your channels, videos and caption tracks. By using these features you are also subject to the YouTube Terms of Service, and Google’s handling of your data is described in the Google Privacy Policy.
Information the app handles
Your Google account and YouTube data
To connect a channel, you sign in with Google in your web browser and allow Rainbow Captions to manage your YouTube account (the youtube.force-ssl permission). The app uses this access only to:
- show the channels you manage and their videos (titles, thumbnails and IDs);
- list, download, upload, replace and delete caption tracks on the videos you choose.
The app never uploads, edits or deletes your videos themselves. Access and refresh tokens are stored in the macOS Keychain on your Mac, and the list of connected channels (name, ID and picture) is saved on your Mac. We never see your Google password, and YouTube data is not sent to us or to anyone else — the free plan record described below keeps only a one-way hash from which no video can be recovered. We don’t use YouTube data for advertising.
Your subtitles and translations
Subtitles are edited on your Mac, and projects are saved as files in the folder you choose. When you press Translate, the text of the lines you translate is sent to Google’s translation services, which return the translations. If you enter your own Google Cloud Translation API key in Settings, the text is sent to Cloud Translation under your Google Cloud account instead; the key is stored on your Mac. Google processes this text under its own terms. We don’t receive or store your subtitle text.
The free plan record
The free plan includes a limited number of translated languages per Mac. So that the limit survives reinstalling the app, the app keeps a record in Google Cloud Firestore (part of Google Firebase). The record is identified by a SHA-256 hash of your Mac’s hardware identifier combined with a fixed value, so the identifier itself is never sent. The record contains:
- the number of free languages used;
- for each free translation you published: an internal project identifier, the language code and a one-way hash (SHA-256) of the ID of the YouTube video it went to — enough to tell whether a later upload targets the same video, and nothing else;
- the app version and the time of the last update.
It doesn’t contain your name, email address, Google account, the text of your subtitles or any data from YouTube in readable form. A copy of the same counters is kept in the Keychain on your Mac. We keep the record while the app offers a free plan. If you want it deleted, write to us and we will help you find it and delete it within 7 days.
App configuration
At launch the app downloads its configuration, such as the settings it needs to sign in with Google, from Firebase Remote Config. To deliver it, Firebase uses a random installation identifier and basic technical information such as the app and macOS version. We don’t use Firebase for analytics or advertising.
Purchases and subscriptions
Subscriptions are sold through the App Store. Apple processes the payment, and we never see your payment details. The app uses RevenueCat, Inc. to check and restore your subscription. RevenueCat receives an anonymous app user ID it generates, App Store transaction information (product, price, currency, dates and storefront), technical information about the app and your Mac, the number of free languages you have used, and which plans you looked at in the app. We use this to unlock Rainbow Captions Pro, restore purchases and understand how subscriptions perform. When you contact us
If you email us, we receive your email address and whatever you include in the message. We use it only to answer you and keep it for as long as we need to handle your request.
The website
rainbowcaptions.com is hosted by Vercel Inc. When you visit, Vercel processes technical data such as your IP address, browser and the pages requested, to deliver the site and keep it secure. The website sets no cookies and uses no analytics or advertising. Fonts are loaded from Google Fonts and the App Store badge from Apple, so those services receive your IP address when the page loads.
Why we are allowed to use this information
- To provide the app you asked for — connecting channels, translating, publishing captions and running your subscription (performance of a contract).
- With your permission — the access you grant in Google’s sign-in screen, which you can withdraw at any time (consent).
- For legitimate interests — enforcing the free plan limit, keeping the app and website secure and answering your messages.
Who else processes information
We share information only with the service providers needed to run Rainbow Captions: Google (YouTube API Services, translation, Firebase), Apple (App Store purchases), RevenueCat (subscriptions), Vercel (website hosting) and our email provider. Some of them process data outside the European Economic Area, including in the United States; those transfers rely on the safeguards the providers offer, such as the EU–US Data Privacy Framework or the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses. We don’t sell personal information or share it for advertising. We may disclose information if the law requires it.
Disconnecting YouTube and deleting data
- In the app, open Upload and choose Disconnect on a channel. This deletes the tokens from your Mac and revokes the app’s access at Google.
- You can also remove Rainbow Captions’ access at any time on the Google security settings page.
- Deleting the app and its folder removes the projects and settings stored on your Mac. Keychain items can be removed in Keychain Access.
- To delete the free plan record or anything else we hold, email support@rainbowcaptions.com. We delete data within 7 days of a verified request.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct or delete your personal data, to restrict or object to its use, to receive it in a portable format and to withdraw consent. To use these rights, email us. If you are in the European Economic Area, you can also complain to a data protection authority — in Latvia, the Data State Inspectorate (www.dvi.gov.lv) — or to the authority where you live.
Children
Rainbow Captions is not intended for children under 13, or under the minimum age to use YouTube in your country, and we don’t knowingly collect their information.
Security
Sign-in tokens are kept in the macOS Keychain, and the app and website use encrypted connections. No method of storage or transmission is completely secure, but we limit what we keep to what the app needs.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we will update the date at the top. If a change is significant, we will also announce it on this website or in the app.
